Mega fauna (Oct-Dec 2021)

Here's some major sightings of large marine life in the last quarter of 2021. 

While there was sad news of a dead baby dugong, and a sea turtle that was entangled in netting (it was rescued). There was also great news of baby sea turtles hatching on our recreational beaches on Sentosa and East Coast Park. And the care taken by many people to make sure they are okay. Fresh dugong feeding trails were seen in both northern and southern shores in Dec. While a sighting of eagle ray also brightens our day. Happy New Year everyone!

Mega fauna (Apr - Jul 2021)

Signs of dugongs, sighting of a pair of mating sea turtles, and sadly, a dolphin staying near the carcass of a dead dolphin.

Dugongs, dolphins and sea turtles seen (Jan-Mar 2021)

Among the amazing large marine animals seen the first quarter of this  year were wild sea turtles, dolphins and sadly, a dead dugong. 

Mega fauna sightings (Dec 2020)

Dolphin overload in December! Dolphins were sighted at St John's Island, East Coast Park and even in a shipyard at Sembawang.

A sea turtle was seen off Keppel Bridge and sharks were documents hunting in shallow waters at Big Sisters Islands.

Mega fauna sightings: Sep - Nov 2020

Three sea turtles were at Seringat-Kias lagoon on 16 Nov 2020. More about the sightings here.

Sightings of dolphins, eagle rays and sharks were also shared during this period.

Sea turtles at Seringat-Kias lagoon

Today, three sea turtles were sighted by Alex Yip, our skipper of Summit Marine Systems, as he waited on the boat in Seringat-Kias lagoon while we were doing our survey on Seringat-Kias and Lazarus Island.

He also managed to document the sightings and kindly shared them with us. Thank you Alex!

Mega sightings (Aug 2020)

The most mega of sightings this month is of a juvenile whale shark!

On 13 Aug, Mothership reported: A wild three-metre juvenile whale shark was recently spotted in Singapore waters. This sighting was confirmed by Dr Zeehan Jaafar, a researcher in Singapore who studies aquatic vertebrates, including fish, in the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore. Dr Zeehan will publish more details on this sighting on the Singapore Biodiversity Records.

There were also lots of sea turtle sightings, and signs of dugong.

Mega sightings (May-Jul 2020)

Sea turtles and signs of dugongs were seen on our shores as surveys and dives restarted in Phase 2.

Jimmy Choo encountered this beautiful Hawksbill sea turtle while diving Pulau Hantu on 12 Jul 2020.

March-April 2020: Dolphins, sea turtles, and possible coral orgy

Just before the 'Circuit Breaker', these amazing sightings were shared. Dolphins while kayaking our Southern Islands, and a sea turtle that came out to lay eggs on our shores.

April is also the season for mass coral spawning of our reefs. But just because we were not out there to see, doesn't mean life doesn't go on in our waters!

Dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles!

As reported on Mothership, on 16 Feb, Zen Freediving shared: during our open water training - visibility was decent, and we saw 3 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins!

Also some reports of possible sightings in the past of dugongs, actual dugongs and not just the feeding trails! As well as sea turtles in the city!

Mega sightings: Nov-Dec 2019

As we end the year, here are some sightings of sea turtles shared in the last weeks of 2019! Arrow Archer shared this amazing encounter diving Pulau Hantu on 30 Nov.

A sea turtle was also seen near the Marina Barrage. While fresh dugong feeding trails are spotted at Chek Jawa's seagrass meadows!

Sea turtles, dolphins, sharks in Singapore waters (October 2019)

YES! Singapore got amazing marine life. The slew of sightings this month began with this awesome video of a sea turtle at Pulau Hantu on 13 Oct 2019. Thanks to TS Tan.

There was another sea turtle sighting at Labrador, while baby sea turtles hatched at the Sisters Islands Marine Park. Dolphins were sighted at West Coast and at Changi, and sharks were seen at the Sisters Islands Marine Park and at Pulau Jong! Here's more ...

Dolphins, sea turtles (Jan-June 2019)

There are wild dolphins, sea turtles and other amazing mega fauna in Singapore waters!

Jeff Lim saw a small group of 4 about dolphins off Labrador Jetty at 10am on 7 July 2019, Sunday. He shared this video of them that he took. Here's a compilation of more sightings shared in Jan-June 2019!

Wild Dolphins sighted off Siloso Beach, 21 Jun 2019

How lovely to hear from Jason Tan who shared his magical encounter with wild dolphins while kayaking at Siloso Beach, Sentosa on 21 Jun 2019.

It was a family of dolphins including a baby dolphin! Jason has kindly agreed to let me share his story and the lovely map he created.

Dead sea turtle at Pulau Semakau (South)

There are living reefs, seagrass meadows and mangroves next to Singapore's only landfill. We surveyed them on a warm evening.

The mangroves seem to be doing well, seagrasses not quite recovered with most Tape seagrasses still cropped. I saw many pale corals, and alas, the bones of a sea turtle in a fishing net.

YES! Singapore got dugongs!

A live dugong was spotted at Chek Jawa in 2013! Although the animal itself is rarely encountered, dugong feeding trails are commonly seen in Singapore's seagrass meadows. Even next to industrial facilities and at public beaches.

YES! Singapore got sea turtles and dolphins! Sightings shared in April-May included sea turtles in our reefs, a sea turtle nesting and her eggs rescued. But sadly, also a sea turtle found dead in a net.

Other interesting sightings shared include dolphins plus a baby dolphin, and a large ray.
