Other shore surveys in Jun 2026

Rui Quan Oh covered the most ground in the month, checking up on Admiralty, Sungei Buloh, Pasir Ris, Marina East and together with Zen Xuan He, Pulau Ubin. They see all the amazing wildlife that regular shore survey team miss. From owls to mousedeer, snakes and skinks, frogs and weird and beautiful insects. And extortionate cats attempting to intimidate snacks out of innocent passersby.

The rest of the team cover Changi and East Coast PCN. 

Other intertidal surveys: Apr 2026

Thanks to team members for checking up on other shores in April. Richard Kuah checked out Coney Island and saw beautiful jellyfishes, many carpet anemones, some with small cardinal fishes swimming very close to them - using the anemones for protection? And many other interesting marine life. Rui Quan Oh and friends checked out Sentosa and saw healthy seagrasses, many small creatures including some pretty fish. Marcus Ng checked out Changi Point and shared beautiful photos of octopuses (so glad they are back), many kinds of sea stars and other echinoderms, colourful flatworms and more. Second B. hainesii at Pasir Ris!

A small team survey the small but lush natural mangroves next to the Sungei Loyang canal. 

This home to a large Bakau mata buaya that we have been visiting for nearly 20 years. Today, we saw a second smaller tree!

Pasir Ris west still alive

Reclamation is planned near the western end of Pasir Ris. So a small team returns on an evening low tide for the first time since  Mar 2020. 

Although we didn't see as much diversity as on our previous surveys, the seagrasses are still doing well, and there were many carpet anemones.

JTC to reclaim 49ha off Lorong Halus

No date has been set for the reclamation, as JTC is reviewing the findings and recommendations of the assessment, as well as feedback from the public about the report. The new land has been designated for industrial and special purposes in the Urban Redevelopment Authority Master Plan.

JTC said: “To enhance the biodiversity in the area, nature-based solutions will be assessed for suitable locations within the reclamation site. “Solutions being studied include creating a gentler shoreline slope or increasing its roughness and number of crevices to encourage intertidal and marine biodiversity growth.”

Expansion of aquaculture in East Johor Strait from 2026

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is planning to release farming spaces off Pasir Ris, Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. These spaces are now occupied by more than 30 open-cage fish farms.

SFA said it would review the environmental impact assessment’s findings and feedback received from the public, and work with relevant stakeholders to minimise any potential environmental impacts of aquaculture development in the East Johor Strait.

East Johor Straits oil patch from Langsat Terminal, Johor (3 Apr 2025)

An oil patch was sighted in the eastern Johor Strait off the northeastern coast of Pulau Ubin on 3 Apr 2025 at around 7pm. Johor Port Authority confirmed an oil spill incident within Langsat Terminal, located near the mouth of the Johor River.

The Malaysian Environment department said low sulfur fuel oil was being transferred to a vessel at the Tanjung Langsat Port Terminal’s jetty when the leak occurred. Approximately 1.6m³ of oil spilled into the sea". From Free Malaysia Today 04 Apr 2025, 05:57 PM

A tiny team surveys Pasir Ris, an accessible and well visited shore. But it remains rich in a variety of marine life and is home to the last large specimen of a rare mangrove tree on the mainland.

The rare tree is still standing and we encountered lots of sea stars. As well as many other fascinating creatures.

Pasir Ris - Perfect intertidal getaway for the family

Pasir Ris shores are easy to get to, and enjoyed by many people. But it remains rich in a variety of marine life.

You can find interesting marine life all along this beach which is more than 3km long. And enjoy the tranquility of palm trees swaying in the sea breeze, under wide skies overlooking Pulau Ubin.

Large predatory sea stars were prowling the lush seagrass meadows of Pasir Ris this morning!

This one had a lumpy centre - just ate something?

There were also other kinds of sea stars, large sea anemones, many crabs and other interesting marine life on this very accessible mainland shore.

A small team surveys another part of Pasir Ris Park shores. We are delighted to see fresh lush seagrasses, rocks dotted with sponges and thus nudibranchs!

We also saw many large sea stars! Even well loved and easily accessed shores are very much alive.

Special mangroves and anemones at Pasir Ris

Today, I check up on the last large Bakau mata buaya tree on the mainland, what is now becoming an annual pilgrimage.

We also check out the intertidal shores and the team made some first time surprise finds! It's amazing what we can see, even on such a highly accessible shore.

Fish Expedition Day 8

The Singapore Marine Fishes Expedition restarts after a much needed day of rest.

The dive team came back with big fishes! While the intertidal team had a muddy day at Pasir Ris Park. Also some glimpses into the angling team's catch on 5 Aug.

Pasir Ris explodes with sea hares and Babylon snails

There are lush seagrass meadows at Pasir Ris Park. This morning, there were lots of Hairy sea hares and Babylon snails.

It's been a while since I surveyed this shore in Jul 2017. I'm relieved to see it's doing well.
