We learnt lots about mangroves from Zeehan at another great Guides of Singapore shores workshop last Thursday!
One of the most compelling mangrove stories is how durians depend on mangroves!

24 Aug (Tue): Sea turtle forum and tag and release at Big Sisters

Is it enough to be breeding animals and learning about them in the zoos and aquariums? Or should future steps endeavour to not only breed them but reintroduce them into the wild?
These and other issues will be discussed at the Multidisciplinary Forum & Turtle Release@Big Sister Island: "Turtles Towards Extinction: How late are we? Is it too late?". Plus the event includes a field trip to tag and release hawksbill turtles at Big Sisters Island!

Census of Marine Life: It's a crabby ocean!

About a fifth of the world's marine species are crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, krill and barnacles. Add in molluscs (including squid and octopus) and fish (including sharks) and that accounts for up to half of the number of species in the world's seas.

"When people think of the ocean, they think of fish and whales. But the big mammals are only two percent of diversity, and fish are 12 percent. We should think first of crustaceans and molluscs."

Come for his talk about his beloved Chek Jawa, which according to the talk synopsis is "currently regarded as one of Singapore Nature Heritage and many would like to see it becoming our next wetland reserve."
