PUB's "Riding the Tides" exhibition on coastal protection: 28-31 Aug

A great way to learn about plans for coastal protection, and see some of the ideas and comments from the public. Plus fun activities for the whole family.
Riding the Tides: PUB exhibition on coastal protection
Bravo to PUB for their public outreach through the exhibition: "Riding the Tides" 28-31 Aug. And their encouragement to reimagine our shores. I am heartened by the inclusion of nature-based solutions, and the cultural and emotional value of shores.

I am heartened to see that nature-based solutions are part of the considerations for coastal protection. There is a great station explaining some engineering solutions: Hybrid nature-based - mangroves and rock revertment. Also a perched beach (maybe this will allow sea turtles to continue to lay on our shores?), mangroves and artificial reefs.
Also featured was the Ideas Competition: “Living with the Rising Seas” invited students from local tertiary institutions to demonstrate ideas to protect the South-eastern coastline of Singapore in the face of rising sea levels while achieving liveability, flexibility, and sustainability. The winning entries include "Migratory Bay at Marina South", "Reeflectin at Keppel Terminal", "Woven Hill at Marine South". More details on the PUB's Coastal Conversation website.
Other exciting ideas included the East Coast: "Emerald Coast", "Endearing East Coast", "Island Chain". And various ideas for Labrador Park and Berlayar Creek.
There was also some details on plans for some shores. More in the video on the Sentosa-Brani masterplan.
As well as for Changi. There was not much new details on Long Island.
There were many interesting ways to learn more about the concepts and ideas. Thourgh artist impression videos, interactive multi player video games, and even a listing of e-books on the topics that you can borrow for free from the Library.
I am particularly heartened by the incorporation of a wide range of viewpoints. Coastal protection can also be opportunities to create new habitats, to test different possible solutions, to integrate different needs. Ultimately to create better spaces of Singaporeans.
Some of the viewpoints raised during PUB's Coastal Conversations on their website (not at the exhibition).
The cultural and emotional meaning of our shores were also taken on board. Like the simple but priceless pleasure of enjoying a sunset. And importance of shores as places of memories. Sculptures and artwork on our shores was also featured.
And photos of the shores were also featured from a photographic competition held earlier this year "Shores to Strength, Celebrating 60 Years" by the Singapore Water Association and Photographic Society of Singapore. The first prize winner is our very own Ian Mun with a photo taken during one of our surveys of a reef flat (team members with orange life vests in the far horizon).
During the exhibition, there are many opportunities to share your ideas and feedback. Even the youngest can share by filling out the two available templates. I love that one has added so many details along the coastline!
Those who prefer to build can also share through lego bricks.
Or drop a note and leave a video comment.
More on how to get involved in coastal protection on the PUB's website

PUB's "Riding the Tides" is on 28-31 Aug at VivoCity Level 1.

I hear the exhibition may also show at other locations later on. Will update as info becomes available.
