Anomurans are NOT True Crabs, although the common name of many anomurans may have the word 'crab'. But Anomurans and True Crabs are grouped together in Order Decapoda as all of them have 10 limbs ('Deca' means ten and 'poda' means foot).
Among the best loved anomurans are hermit crabs!
Also anomurans are the fascinating porcellain crabs!
Then there are these strange freshwater anomurans that are only found in South America!
The intriguing mole crabs are also anomurans.
While they are NOT anomurans, a checklist of marine lobsters is also included in this Supplement. And they are just as astonishingly beautiful!
What are the checklists about?
From Annotated checklist of anomuran decapod crustaceans of the world (exclusive of the Kiwaoidea and families Chirostylidae and Galatheidae of the Galatheoidea) – Preamble and scope. Patsy A. McLaughlin, Christopher B. Boyko, Keith A. Crandall, Tomoyuki Komai, Rafael Lemaitre, Masayuki Osawa and Dwi Listyo Rahayu: 1-4. [pdf, 55.1 KB]
This series of annotated checklists are accompanied by brief reviews of the historical aspects of its classification, general external morphology, features of larval development and current phylogenetic status. The checklists include all currently recognized valid species, primary synonyms and homonyms, notes on matters of confusion and/or misunderstanding, and complete bibliographic references to all original descriptions. The lists are enhanced by a collection of photographs depicting the variety exhibited by members of these taxa.
