Mangroves: the "most carbon rich forests in the tropics"

Mangroves store more carbon that almost any other forest on Earth!

A recent study found that mangroves store up to FOUR times more carbon per acre than most other tropical forests around the world. How do mangroves do this?

Nudibranch at Tanah Merah!

Hurray, it's the first time I've seen a nudibranch on Tanah Merah since the oil spill hit this shore slightly more than a year ago.
Dr Paul found this rather large Discodoris boholiensis crawling about on the rock wall. And this is also my first entry for Tanah Merah into the wild fact sheets. Wow.

March wild facts updates: fishies, nem, slug and more

Mystery fishes finally figured out! At last, I diligently process fishy photos from all years past, hunkered down over fishy books, trawled through the interwebs. And finally made a stab at identifying some commonly seen but mysterious fishes.
Black cardinalfish (Apogon melas)
We often see this small dark fish with rounded fins skulking near reefs. I think it's the Black cardinalfish (Apogon melas) that is identified by a pale edged dark spot at the base of the second dorsal fin. Mighty difficult to see this spot on a tiny fish!

Mandai mangrove madness: rare plants and big trees

Over the last four days I've been visiting Mandai mangroves every day. The lush and luscious mangroves here are bewildering to look at!
On these trips, I tried to GPS mark the big trees and the rare trees. It was overwhelming!

Mandai mangrove madness: critters

While I was primarily looking at plants in Mandai mangroves, I did also see many animals. The enormous number of egrets and herons feeding on the mudflats at the mouth of Sungei Mandai Besar is hard to miss.
Indeed, the mudflats and mangroves of Mandai and Kranji all the way to Sungei Buloh are feeding grounds for all kinds of shorebirds.

19 Apr (Tue): Second sea turtle forum - How are the released sea turtles doing?

In August 2010, several captive bred hawksbill turtles were released at Big Sisters Island.
This month, a follow-up forum is being conducted to share how these sea turtles are doing. All are welcome to attend!
