Flora Singapura - a new resource on Singapore's plants

The first new resource in 2011! Flora Singapura aims to overcome "the terse technical descriptions" found in botanical texts. And instead describe the identifying field characters using photographs and commentary.
Awesome! This is just what ordinary wannabe botanists desperately need!

Work on the Sungei Buloh Masterplan begins

A recent Port Marine Notice announces soil investigation works off Kranji Nature Trail, part of the effort to develop the area around Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.
More about the Sungei Buloh Masterplan, with updates given by the Reserve to volunteers in Aug 10 and Dec 10.

Saving mangroves at Pulau Tekong continues!

Efforts to save more than 1,000 mangrove trees on Pulau Tekong's north-eastern coastline continue! These trees are at risk from serious erosion due to boat traffic.

This never-before-attempted approach to coastal protection and restoration is being tried out by NParks to save possibly the last largest pristine stretch of mangroves in Singapore. It's good to hear that the efforts are on-going in a recent MPA Port Marine Notice. More about this effort.

Just announced, some exciting job vacancies in biodiversity research in Singapore!
There are two vacancies for Research Assistants for the Comprehensive Marine Biodiversity Survey of Singapore. And vacancies for one Research Fellow, Four Research Assistants for “Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity in Singapore”

Job vacancy: Project Officer at RMBR

As the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research (RMBR) embarks on expansion plans with a new building to be constructed by 2014, they are seeking a special person to take on this vacancy.
The jobholder will assist in the supervision and coordination of the new natural history museum project.

Mangroves at Pasir Ris briefly

There are some special trees in the mangroves of Pasir Ris. We decided to have a look at them today.
Although there remains a great deal of trash on the shore, there were many seedlings on the shore too. I'm not sure if the seedlings were planted as they were regularly spaced apart.

Slivers of mangroves line what remains of Sungei Pandan after it got dammed up for the Pandan Reservoir.

Project Driftnet tested at Tanah Merah

Project Driftnet is a new effort to deal with the heartbreaking issue of abandoned driftnets on our shores.
Yesterday, a small team help test out the protocols for the Project on an abandoned net at Tanah Merah.

More mangroves at Kranji in the New Year

Our first trip for the New Year is of course back to Kranji to check out the mangroves there. It's high tide when we arrive!
So we explore the edges where it's drier and come across some surprising mangrove trees!
