Horseshoe crab eggs seen at Mandai mangroves!

These little yellow spheres found today at the Mega Marine Survey at Mandai mangroves may be horseshoe crab eggs!
Several were seen in the sandy banks of Sungei Mandai Besar! Sean took a video clip showing movement inside the egg!

Dr Tan Koh Siang explains that elsewhere, horseshoe crabs lay their eggs in sheltered sandy beaches. In Singapore, sandy areas are not that common in our mangroves.
Lots of Mangrove horseshoe crabs (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) are seen at Mandai, including during our survey today. So perhaps the horseshoe crabs at Mandai lay their eggs along the sandy Sungei Mandai Besar? How exciting!

More about the Mega Marine Survey at Mandai mangroves and the other interesting creatures seen at today's survey with a video clip of Dr Tan's highlights.

A study found that juvenile horseshoe crabs were found in meadows of Beccari's seagrass (Halophila beccarii). Vast meadows of this rare seagrass has been seen at Kranji Nature Trail, other parts of Kranji and also at Mandai mangroves.

So Mandai seems to be a perfect home for our Mangrove horseshoe crabs!
