About the talk
Ophiuroids are the largest group within the Echinodermata phylum, and includes brittle stars (Ophiurida) and basket stars (Euryalina). As echinoderms, they are related to sea stars, sea cucumbers, and sea urchins. Like sea stars, they exhibit a penta-radial symmetry but differ in their long, slender whip-like arms.
Ophiuroids can be found in most parts of the world, in both shallow-water marine habitats and deep sea habitats.
About the speaker
Dr Fujita is currently a senior curator with the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo (Division of Marine Invertebrates, Department of Zoology). He specialises in the taxonomy and ecology of echinoderms, in particular, Ophiuroids and Asteroidea.
