Killed by abandoned fishing line

Another sad victim of an irresponsible fisherman, the Bird Ecology Study Group blog shared about this hornbill that was strangled by an abandoned fishing line.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

The Bird Ecology Study Group blog has shared incidents of other birds killed in abandoned fishing lines including a Javan myna and heron and little heron and a buffy fish owl.

A single abandoned fishing line also killed a sea turtle.

Of course these abandoned fishing lines do damage in the sea as well, such as uprooting sea fans.

Here's some action that is being taken elsewhere to deal with this issue.

This issue was reported in the media: Saving birds from careless anglers, Straits Times 11 Jul 09.
