Hermit crabs pinch!

As Marcus finds out when the fiesty little land hermit crab (Coenobita cavipes) demonstrated its annoyance at being picked up.We saw a few of them at sunrise, but there must have been lots and lots of them as the sandy shore above the high water mark was criss-crossed with their tracks.

Earlier on, I saw some other special hermit crabs.

This little hairy hermit crab is quite commonly seen on our shores.
Often, you can tell they are around when there is a collection of tiny shells of different kinds of snails gathered together on the midwater mark.
While exploring the rocky shore today, I came across two of these hermits that I've seen only a few times before.
Here's a closer look at this handsome black animal with colourful markings.
A little further among the corals was this hairy colourful hermit. It's possibly Dardanus sp.
Another hermit that is rarely seen.

It does pay to look at hermits. But don't handle them too much because they pinch!
